OUGD401 CONTEXT OF PRACTICE- A brief history

Photography

Despite not being particularly famous for it, one important part of the Swiss Style is its remarkable use of photography. Following the modernist ideas in which photography was a much better tool to portray reality than drawings and illustrations.

'the photograph seems to approach reality more closely than the drawing and it enables us to see more, to see more precisely, and to share visual experiences' (Scheidegger in Hollis, 2006, p209)

'An object represented photographically in black and white demands symbolic interpretation; any abstract traits, however, disappear completely when color is introduced'
Armin Hofmann
