1450's herald the age of print, Guttenbergs press started it all off, monks only reproduced important books This took humanity out of the dark age. Guttenbergs gothic script was first used in 1450.

Humanist type was meant to reflect human hand writing, made to be more readable by being lighter. Used to signify something historic; Centaur, Bennerly

Old Style- refined humanist moving away from from script. Type as a discipline emerges. Developed in Venice during the renaissance.

Roman- designed for king, transitional thick and thin stems

Modern- 1790's style, sophistication, elegant because of ultra thin hairlines

Slab serif- Egyptian links to orientalism, designed in era of mass industry, mass advertisement, used to grab attention.

Sans serf- Berthold type foundry

Times new roman designed in a modern era.

Cooper black 1921- warm embrace from 1970's friend
