Context of Practice

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

My analytical and creative writing skills have been developed hugely throughout this module. I have learnt new methods of writing such as triangulation, this enabled me to have a more in depth discussion about a point from multiple views and further analyse it. My research skills are constantly developing and this module aided in the development, as it required me to use a variety a research techniques from online journals to physical publications.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have developed my synthesis between written and practical solutions, before the module I didn’t pay too much attention to the relation and synthesis of written theory and practical elements. But through creating my publication and prints it has shown how informed I am on the subject and how the essay has ultimately influenced it and is an extension.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I believe the synthesis between the written and physical piece is my biggest strength. My physical design shows a great understanding of the subject and the points that arose in my essay and responds in a way that visually shows what is brought up in my written piece. The way in which the final prints illustrate the point of Jive Modernism is a strength as it shows I understand what it is I have been talking about and what impact it has on design.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

The depth at which some points are addressed in my written piece can be seen as a weakness, although I didn’t find it necessary to go into great depth in relation to the point I was trying to make, it’d still illustrate a greater understanding of the subject. My variety of references was also lacking, I found it difficult to find the information I needed from a variety of sources as opposed to one or a few. This affects the strength of the points I am try to prove because it looks as if I don’t have multiple opinions from a variety of places to back up the point.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     Produce a larger more in depth response to my written piece as I feel the average person still wouldn’t be able to understand the point, even though they aren’t the target audience I feel it should still be easier to understand.
2.     Not leave so much up until the last minute because it restricts me to the quantity and quality of work I can produce.
3.     Complete the studio tasks a lot sooner so that I have a greater understanding not only of the subject but also of the writing technique required in order to aid my essay.
4.     In future I would like to take part in more critiques about the synthesis of the practical piece because I didn’t have a single one for this module and I felt it hampered my final product.
5.     Not leave my essay until the night before first draft hand in, by spending more time writing my essay it would allow me to create a stronger argument and show a greater understanding of the subject.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
